Class Categories
Novice Ranks These classes are open to all ranks but the focus is on elementary techniques.
Intermediate - Advanced Ranks These classes are for Green Belts and higher; the focus is on rank specific curriculum elements.
Black Belt These classes are for all black belts and include a diverse range of themes centered around the black belt curriculum.
Weekly Themes
Curriculum Combinations (CC) These classes focus on combinations specific to each rank. Typically there is free time given to students to practice individually or within their rank group.
Sparring Skills (SS) These classes focus on sparring skills from contact levels to competition sparring to sparring strategies. These classes often involve controlled contact sparring with the other students and ALL students are expected to bring the appropriate sparring gear to these classes.
Patterns & Technical (PT) These classes can range from focusing on the pattern set itself to honing the technical aspects of the art. Students are expected to know their all their patterns up to their rank as well as the meanings associated with them (as students may be asked these during class).
Power & Breaking (PB) These classes focus on the Theory of Power and how to generate power in all techniques. These classes are a good opportunity for students to practice the technique(s) they will be required to break with for their next test. Time to practice on the school's set of re-breakable boards is also often a component of these classes.
Instructor's Choice (IC) Instructor's choice means just that. The designated instructor of the night is free to choose any of the themes listed above or perhaps bring a new element which will contribute to students' understanding and skills. Classes designated as such require that sparring gear is brought by all students of appropriate rank as there may be a sparring component.
Specialty Themes
Competition Preparation (CP) These classes focus always precede a tournament and are dedicated to preparing any students wishing to compete in the upcoming tournament. This means a focus on patterns and pattern presentations to judges as well as competition sparring. Sparring gear is required by students attending these classes as well.
Progress Evaluation These classes focus on students who are signed up to test for a second or third progression stripe. Students wishing to test for a second or third progression must sign up a week in advance.
Promotion Evaluation These classes focus on students who are signed up to test for their next rank. Students eligible (typically must have three progression stripes) and wishing to test must sign up a week in advance.
Focused Training Focus training sessions are open to Green Belts and higher who are capable of self-directed study. These sessions typically have a patterns, technical, and fitness component and are dedicated to students preparing for a Black Belt promotion.
